A Guide into the Unconscious: Through the Hare
This installation is a culmination of works that incorporate a broader theme of the physical and spiritual drift between conscious and unconscious thought. The sheep depict our conscious beings, while the hare is the spiritual guide into the realm of the unconscious. The physical materials of fibers, such as the draped fabric, the crocheted yarn, and the wrinkled fabric drawings on canvas, indicate more than just the commonplace material that symbolizes the functionality of the sheep's fur, but also the transference of shapes and material we undergo when being teleported into the realm of the unconscious. The small landscape drawings depict areas where the hare resides before his transformation and lead us into the otherworldly realm of our unconsciousness, further building upon the hare's significance in our journey, where we drift from consciousness to unconsciousness.
The plastered hanging sheets of small fabric can be understood as the form of a bedsheet, being that when we fall asleep, we drift from our consciousness to our dream-like unconsciousness, and the shape that the lamb might take place when being taken from the earthly, conscious realm to this dreamy unconscious place. The crocheted plaster piece at the top of the installation is another form that the lamb can be transformed into, making the fabric and yarn more than just these materials we find in the commonplace that do not extend further than their functional qualities.
